Interview with Gloria, founding board member

Volunteer Feature

After seven glorious years, founding board member Gloria is retiring and passing on her legacy. We sat down with her (virtually) and spoke about what inspires her, some of her favourite memories with the foundation, and her future plans.

Can you tell us a little about what you are passionate about?

Volunteering! It is part of who I am, I started when I was sixteen. I felt that need to help no matter the circumstances were around me, it is just part of my DNA.

What inspired you to start B’s Supporting Youth Foundation (Lunches for Learning)?

I was fortunate to be in the right place at the right time. The day I met with James and Colin was so inspiring. B’s was always a group effort and I will always look back fondly on how Leslie kept us all on the right track. It was easy to become motivated and even more so as the team expanded. So exciting to watch the growth of BSYF from a seed to a flourishing foundation. It was very special for everyone to support the main goal which was to feed hungry kids in schools so they could be the best that they can be.

What is your hope for the future of Lunches for Learning?

In the future, I hope that LFL continues to expand and reaches more students in the Edmonton area. “Kids Helping Kids” is a special gift that you hope passes on to future generations.

What was the biggest challenge you have faced with this program?

The biggest challenge was to keep funds coming in whether by individuals, groups or grants etc. and somehow we always drew the lucky straw. Also, to spread the word about a jewel of a foundation that feeds kids to create success.

Tell me about a time that’s touched your heart while creating this wonderful program?

One of the best feelings was when a group arrived with their teacher to make lunches from elementary to university to adult groups. It’s a huge eye-opener to realize that there are students who are not as fortunate as they are. A spark would be lit and questions would be asked. Most important is how can we help. Saying all that, how heartwarming when a student would acknowledge they are a recipient of the lunches and now they are giving back.

What are you going to miss most about Lunches for Learning?

I’ll truly miss the extraordinary, loving group of volunteers devoted to keeping this program going. None of this is possible without a Team opening their hearts to create a successful and long-lasting program.

How can people help?

People can help by sharing the program, volunteering and of course, donations always appreciated. Once they’ve seen for themselves they’re hooked. I was told on a few occasions what a “well-oiled machine” we were. Also, having community involvement is a given…what a great way to promote! It would be great to have the media involved to share the unique “Kids Helping Kids” approach.

What are your future plans?

I retired from the Foundation after 7 years. I’m taking each day as a new adventure with my awesome family and friends. A warm, heartfelt goodbye to the Lunches for Learning Team. Hugs to all…you’re all amazing.

Thank you, Gloria! We are so incredibly lucky to follow in your footsteps and take this foundation one step further. Thank you for everything you have done for us. We will make you proud!
